Nikela ~ Helping People Saving Wildlife

Free to be Wild is extremely grateful to have met Margrit and Russ, from Nikela, and forever thankful for their help in raising awareness of the Sanctuary and assist with donations and helping aid a few releases. Below is an article they wrote about Baye and the sanctuary.

Help Baye Save Wildlife

Zimbabwe is home to lion, elephant, painted dogs and many endangered animals we expect to find in Africa. The infamous killing of Cecil the lion happened outside of Hwange National Park on the north western side of the country. Each year thousands of tourists come to experience the African bush and all the diverse species found here.

However, despite the attention wildlife gets, many injured, orphaned or confiscated animals and birds have nowhere to go. Nowhere to get nurtured back to full health and released into the wild for a second chance at living free. With the constant decline of wildlife species across the board, including the highly endangered pangolin this simply had to change.

When an orphaned young baboon showed up on Baye’s door step, although at 22 she had other life plans destiny was calling and she listened and the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, Free To Be Wild, was born.

Within two years Baye secured six acres of land in Bulawayo, in the south western part of Zimbabwe, cleaned it up, fenced it in and started building enclosures and safe places for the animals, birds and other critters that began arriving almost immediately.

Without any government funding or sponsorship from the large wildlife conservation organizations Baye and her team rely heavily on public donations. In coming animals, birds, primates and even bull frogs often need medical attention, always need food and shelter for anywhere from a day to several months until they are ready to be released back into the wild. This all costs money. Saving endangered animals and those who need help costs money.

Baye’s rehabilitation facility is not about keeping these animals in captivity, as some wildlife centers do, to show them off to make money from paying visitors. Baye is about getting these wild animals and birds back into the wild as soon as possible.

Because Baye doesn’t use the wildlife at her center to make money she needs help from people like us to pay for their food and shelter.

If you would like to help the Sanctuary, you can make a donation, no amount is too small or you can join their Guardians of the Wild programme and symbolically adopt one of the orphan animals in their care.
